Lava caves or tubes are totally dark and silent. Tubes are a type of lava cave that forms when an active lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust, which thickens and forms a roof above the still-flowing lava stream. Tubes can form by the crusting over of a lava channel or from flows where where the lava is moving under the surface.
Native Hawaiians hold certain types off lava flows as sacred because they hold a different type of energy.
Ka Lae, also know as South Point, is the southern most point in the United States. It is also held as a very sacred place. Locals say there are a lot of UFO sightings here.
Kealakekua Point, one of Hawaii’s most Sacred Sites. Native Hawaiians erected these statues to symbolize the Pliedaes Pila, our guide, led us in a sacred Hawaiian chant and ritual at sunset.

We arrived on the big island of Hawaii and met Willilam (Pila) Chiles. He greeted us with an ancient Hawaiian chant and then we had a chance to sit down and talk about his work on the big island, Firefly Village. Pila has plans for a “no carbon footprint” community on the Kona coast or in Lihui, Maui that will consist of residences and a university for “health and rejuvenation research.” Among many of its unique and practical features are a health and study-center in an ecological setting designed to rejuvenate the body, mind, and spirit. Pila says it will be a “model for where humanity can be.”
Pila say that “Hawaii is the crossroads of all our mysteries. The Hawaiian people, their legends and culture, even the location of the islands themselves hold a key to the path for the future of humankind.” He speaks of Hawaii as a place to heal the body, mind, and spirit and we certainly experienced just that!
The big island is so very different than the other Hawaiian islands. The green palms and exotic flowers stand in stark contrast to the lava that covers most of the island. On the west or Kona side of the island it is semi desert, receiving only six to eleven inches of rain a year. However, with irrigation, it is turned into a beautiful tropical paradise; the lava providing the perfect base for growing.
In contrast the east, or Hilo side, is a lush tropical rain forest that was covered with heavy mist during our entire visit.
As soon as we departed the plane we felt a shift in the energy and while driving north along the highway our adventure began. By chance it seemed, I spotted one of the lava tubes Pila had described in his book. It was located not far off the road so we parked the car along side the road and began to climb over the rough lava, which stretched as far as the eye could see.
The tube, which is like a cave, was quite large and the floor was littered with small to large lava boulders making walking somewhat difficult. Once inside the tube, it was pitch black and literally no sound penetrated its walls. Standing very still you could sense a oneness with your environment and a growing awareness that you could transport your consciousness anywhere you wished.
On Wednesday we visited Pele, Hawaii’s active volcano. It was quite vast, much larger than we had expected, and shrouded in mist. There were volcanic steam vents everywhere and again, the landscape was quite different. That evening we met Pila and a friend who escorted us to one of the island’s most sacred sites. It has been turned into a state park which will hopefully preserve its sacredness and beauty. At sunset we walked barefoot over the rugged lava, past ancient Hawaiian wood carvings said to correspond to the Pleiades constellation, and then out to the ocean’s edge. As we sat in meditation Pila intoned another ancient and mystical Hawaiian chant. It was a very moving and mystical experience, one we will always remember.
