Life and the Law of Equilibrium
Carolyn Mulkerrin, Instructor
Carolyn is a dedicated teacher. She has been a student of various mystery schools where she studied Universal Laws and how they relate to consciousness. In addition, she is a successful businesswoman. This enables her to give a balanced approach to teaching Universal Laws, and how to apply them in your everyday life. In The Secret, you were introduced to part of the process for creating a more successful, happy, healthy, and prosperous life. This class will assist you in unraveling The Secret’s deeper meanings and support you in putting an end to living in polarized states of consciousness that may be holding you back from the life you want to live.

The Universe Is Always Equilibrating
We know that we live in a dualistic universe. We cannot have up without down, one side without the other or positive without negative. The fact that two opposites exist simultaneously means that the universe is always trying to get us back to center or equilibrium. By applying the Law of Equilibrium (Law of Polarity) to our consciousness it means that in reality, we cannot have support without challenge, pleasure without pain, or positive without a negative because both exist simultaneously. It is what we choose to focus on that dictates our emotional state. By realizing that any situation will have both positive and negative qualities we empower ourselves to begin to minimize the emotional swings we go through.
This dualistic nature of the universe is referred to as the Law of Polarity and is one of the seven hermetic principles listed in the Kybalion:
Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled. ~The Kybalion~
How the Law of Equilibrium Plays Out in Our Lives
What if we were to apply this law to our consciousness? Psychologists and Psychiatrists have known for some time that our brains are designed to hold both positive and negative thoughts simultaneously. Could it be that our brains are always trying to equilibrate? Could this mean that the stronger we hold a positive intention, our mind will start seeking its equal and opposite intention? Or could we put it this way, the more lopsided our intention, the stronger the pull to attract the opposite of that intention?
Recently I had an experience where a project I was working on was canceled abruptly, due to the sagging economy. As I was leaving, I asked the project manager for some feedback. He gave me some very critical feedback but there was good feedback too. I began to focus on the critical part so I was starting to feel unworthy. On the same day, I received an email from a director of my company praising me. If I had held onto the negative feedback, it is quite possible that I would have attracted a situation at work where I may not have been able to attract a new project due to lack of self-confidence. But by focusing on the positive feedback, I was able to keep presenting myself in a confident manner that attracted more project opportunities. The truth is, if you are getting an overly exaggerated opinion of yourself you will attract humbling circumstances. If you are minimizing yourself, you will attract uplifting experiences. The universe will equilibrate your consciousness at your appropriate level of awareness.
Do Our Emotional States Mirror the Quantum Model?
Let’s take a brief look at Quantum physics and delve into the micro level of the
universe. We can see this principle of equilibrium plays out at the Quantum level. We know that a photon goes in and out of existence. It can exist as a wave or particle and its intrinsic properties include charge, mass, and spin. In it’s excited state, the photon may have either a positive or negative charge. We could also call these states, infatuation or defatuation (resentment).
When the photon has a charge, it appears to have a physical mass. As the photon goes out into its orbit, a gravitational pull will bring it back to center. As the photon goes through the center, it loses its charge and becomes formless; it loses mass and becomes a wave. As it becomes excited, it will take again take on a charge and will emerge in its orbit as form.
We can use this Quantum model to take a look at our emotional states. We can say that a highly charged emotional state is either an infatuation (positive) or resentment (negative). When we view a situation as having more positives than negatives, we are infatuated. When we view a situation as being more negative than positive, we are resentful. Either one of these states will take us out of our center. We can define center as that state where we have the potential to align with our soul.
Have you ever been in meditation when you lose sense of your body, space and time? This would be an example of when your mind is quite and balanced. While in this state, inspiration can be received. Once we decide to take action, we are either in an infatuated or resentful state. We have to come out of center in order to create charge and form. If we are infatuated with something, we want to move towards it, if we are resentful, we will want to move away from it. Either state causes action.
Equal Support and Challenge
Buddhists talk about how man suffers because he is attached to his or her own illusions. I believe our illusions come about because we do not see that the universe is always equilibrating. There is always equal support and challenge given to us at any point in time. It is just that we tend to focus on only one side. Could it be that our brains are always trying to equilibrate? If so, does this means that the stronger we hold a positive intention the mind will start seeking its equal and opposite intention? Another way of putting it is the more lopsided the intention, the stronger the pull to attract the opposite of that intention.
Have you ever noticed that sometimes when you feel like something good has happened, you get totally infatuated, euphoric, and then something you consider bad happens? This could just be the universe trying to equilibrate your state of consciousness and bring you back to reality.
This could be related to the state of our economy right now. People where infatuated with material things, buying over their means, buying on credit. They had to have it now and not wait until they had saved up enough to buy it with cash. So the universe has given us a big correction in our markets and our banking systems. We now have a lot of resentment and fear due to people being afraid of losing their jobs because corporations cannot get loans or their sales are down.
At a macro level, these are circumstances that are needed to correct the market and banking systems to bring them more into balance. As the cycle improves, we will go back into spending freely and continue this cycle until we understand that there needs to be equilibrium between inflow and outflow of cash. At the same time on a personal level, some of the people who are losing their jobs are taking this opportunity to reinvent themselves and find new careers and new ways of making money. Others will lose their jobs and not see the opportunity and may go into a downward spiral for a while.
Laws of Polarity Work in Our Lives
The truth is that no matter what happens to us, we always have equal support and challenge. Go back to a time in your life when you felt someone was being really hard on you, or mean. Remember it? Now look around you at that same instance and find who was loving and supporting you. It is there; it may be one or many, but it is there. As you start to realize this, you start to see the laws of polarity are working in your life. We always have equal support and challenge, it is just that, what we tend to focus on is lopsided. Imagine how our lives could be if we realize that, the universe is always giving us equal support and challenge in order to bring us to center and create a better life for ourselves. We would see that our lives are in balance. We would start to see the beauty of a world that is created for helping us reach higher potentials, and not a world that is trying to hold us back or keep us stuck in one place.
